Cursed Seas (Hacksaw): Slot Review & Theme

We have seen plenty of pirate slots and a fair share of zombie pirate slots in our time. But something quite different from what Hacksaw has developed in Cursed Seas. The artwork is excellent and almost of Renaissance quality, so we love this slot. The features are innovative, too, as is typical with this developer, and the soundtrack fits the bill perfectly.

The seas are rough, just like the volatility of this game. Buckle up for a swashbuckling ride into the unknown. Cursed chests create cursed areas and additive reel multipliers in both the base game and the free spins round, and everything keeps building during the feature. The other bonus game is all about accumulating the most significant possible bet multiplier via three different symbols, and it's a hold-and-win style feature. The 12,500x potential is solid, as is the artwork alone.

Paytable and Bet Size

Boats brave enough to board can do so by picking a bet of 10 p/c to $100 per spin and having access to three bonus buy options.

Cursed Seas features a 5-reel, 26-line grid with a maximum bet of 100 coins. Winning combinations must start from the leftmost side of the grid, land on adjacent reels, and contain at least three matching pay symbols. Starting on the lower side, Cursed Seas has an anchor, star, flag, pistols, and skull 'n crossbones. These symbols pay 1-1.5x the bet for the lows and 3-10x for the highs. The game also has a regular wild symbol that can substitute for any regular pay symbol.

Feature of Cursed Seas (Hacksaw)

The Cursed Chest is also linked to the Cursed Area feature, the Sunken Treasure bonus game and the Dead Men Tell No Tales bonus game. The feature can be purchased with a few of the game's buy options.

Wild Symbol

The character symbol premium pays between 3 and 10 times your stake for five-of-a-kind wins, and both the regular wild symbol and the cursed chest symbol can replace other symbols to help complete or improve wins.

Cursed Chest

When the Cursed Chest appears, it creates a Cursed Area from its position and up to the top of the grid. However, this only happens when at least one of the cursed positions will be involved in a win. The Cursed Chest then opens up to reveal a multiplier of x2 to x200, which becomes a reel multiplier for all lines that involve any of the reels with this upgrade. If more than one reel gets this upgrade, multipliers are added together, boosting all line wins involving the relevant reel or reels.

Sunken Treasure Bonus Round

The Sunken Treasure Bonus Round triggers three lantern scatters, which award ten free spins. The Cursed Chest will always open in the bonus round, and a Cursed Area is created that remains sticky until the end of the feature. The multiplier from any chest is added to the total win multiplier, and all wins in cursed areas are boosted accordingly. You get +2 extra spins when you land two lantern scatters on the same free spin and +4 extra spins when you land three lantern scatters on the same free spin; likewise, landing five lantern scatters on a free spin will award six extra spins.

Dead Men Tell No Tales Bonus Game

The Dead Men Tell No Tales Bonus Game triggers when you land four lantern scatters in the base game and start with three spins in the tally. The feature is a hold-and-win game in which you land only Cursed Skulls, Tormented Skulls, Kraken, or blank symbols. Each Cursed Skull symbol adds a multiplier value above the relevant reel while creating a cursed area, as in the base game.

Cursed Skull Symbol

The cursed skull symbols can add values between +1 and +500 to the reel multiplier, while the tormented skulls boost the current reel multiplied by a multiplier of x2 to x25. The Kraken symbol comes with values between +1 and +500, and its value is added to all reel multipliers. Each non-blank symbol that lands resets the spin tally to 3 each time, and you can collect your winnings by pressing the "Collect" button at any time during play. All reel multipliers are then added to the cursed positions while being summed up and paid when you have run out of spins during this feature round.

Feature Buy Menu

Feature Buy, a new menu that can be accessed in some jurisdictions and not in others, comes with three options: BonusHunt FeatureSpins (top-tier RTP of 96.21 % and very high volatility) - pay 3x your stake to increase your bonus round chances by 5x; Sunken Treasure FS (top-tier RTP of 96.26 % and high volatility) - pay 100x your stake to get this bonus round; Dead Men Tell No Tales (top-tier RTP of 96.33 % and high volatility) - pay 200x your stake to get this bonus round.

Cursed Seas (Hacksaw): Summary

The artwork in Cursed Seas is of a quality you only see sometimes in online slots, but there are no animations. Yet the game has some stunning backdrops, like the cursed chests that reveal solid multipliers also in the base game. The multipliers are added together, which can lead to more significant wins; the symbol values are pretty enough, too--not least when you consider what kind of win multipliers are possible.

The recipe for Hacksaw Ridge is similar to what we are used to from the game, but it still feels like a fresh new game with its quirks and peculiarities. The free spins round is an enhanced version of the base game, and the hold-and-win style game is probably your best shot at cracking the great 12,500x potential. Both features can have large payouts, so be sure to play them often!
